Within the eTwinning project Life Lessons from European Proverbs, the students in class 12 U (Humanities profile) participated in an engaging collaborative workshop that combined intercultural learning, digital storytelling, critical thinking, and creative writing. The activity, coordinated by their teacher of English, was designed to transform a traditional proverb into a meaningful educational experience, demonstrating how cultural heritage can become a catalyst for developing twenty-first-century competences.
The workshop began with the students watching the educational video "Digital Storytelling through Proverbs and Collaboration". The video introduced the pedagogical value of digital storytelling as an innovative methodology that enables learners to communicate ideas creatively while developing linguistic, digital, and collaborative skills. Through authentic examples, the students explored how stories inspired by proverbs can communicate universal human values across cultures and generations.
Following the video, the class focused on the Polish proverb "No Pain, No Gain," which had been selected by the Romanian team as part of the international collaboration. Rather than interpreting the proverb literally, the students engaged in a guided discussion to analyse its deeper meaning. They explored concepts such as perseverance, resilience, determination, personal growth, responsibility, and the relationship between effort and achievement. By connecting the proverb with real-life situations, literature, education, sports, and personal experiences, the learners discovered that the wisdom embedded in proverbs transcends national borders and remains highly relevant in contemporary society.
The discussion represented an important methodological stage of the workshop. Before writing, the students collaboratively generated ideas, identified possible characters, conflicts, and moral lessons, and reflected on how the proverb could inspire authentic narratives capable of engaging an international audience. This brainstorming phase encouraged divergent thinking, empathy, and the ability to view the same cultural message from multiple perspectives.
The class was subsequently organised into four collaborative teams, each challenged to create an original digital story inspired by the Polish proverb. Although every group started from the same proverb, the resulting stories reflected diverse interpretations and creative approaches. Some teams chose educational settings where perseverance led to academic success, while others explored themes such as friendship, overcoming personal obstacles, achieving sporting goals, or developing self-confidence after failure. This diversity illustrated that a single proverb can generate multiple meaningful narratives, each highlighting different dimensions of human experience.
Throughout the creative process, the students applied the principles of digital storytelling by carefully structuring their narratives, developing relatable characters, creating coherent plots, and emphasising a clear moral message. Team members negotiated ideas, distributed responsibilities, revised one another's work, and provided constructive feedback, transforming writing into a genuinely collaborative endeavour.
From a methodological perspective, the workshop promoted several key educational approaches. Project-Based Learning placed the Romanian students in authentic situations requiring inquiry, creativity, and problem-solving. Collaborative Learning fostered communication, shared responsibility, and peer learning. Intercultural Education encouraged appreciation of another country's cultural heritage while recognising common European values. Finally, Digital Storytelling integrated language learning with digital literacy, creativity, and reflective thinking, allowing students to become active creators rather than passive consumers of content.
The activity also contributed to the development of numerous key competences outlined in European educational frameworks. The students strengthened their communication skills in English, enhanced their digital competences through planning multimedia narratives, developed personal and social competences through teamwork, expanded their cultural awareness by exploring Polish traditions, and exercised entrepreneurial thinking by transforming an abstract proverb into an original creative product.
The workshop concluded with each team presenting its story to the class, reflecting on the creative choices made during the writing process, and discussing how the same proverb had inspired four unique narratives. Their final version will become part of the collaborative international digital book created by the project partners, illustrating how European proverbs can inspire meaningful stories that connect young people across cultures.
This learning experience once again demonstrated that proverbs are far more than expressions of traditional wisdom. They are powerful educational resources that stimulate reflection, creativity, intercultural dialogue, and collaborative learning. By transforming the Polish proverb "No Pain, No Gain" into original digital stories, our students not only improved their language and digital skills, but also discovered that perseverance, resilience, and determination are universal values that unite cultures across Europe.
Here are the four stories created by each team:
1. Life teaches us many important lessons, and one of them is “No pain, no gain”. This means that if we want to achieve something, we must work hard and never give up.
For example, imagine a boy who is not happy with his body. He is too skinny or too fat, and other people make jokes about his appearance. He decides to start going to the gym, but at first, he fails. However, he does not give up. He starts a diet and continues training.
After some time, he begins to see progress. He feels more comfortable in his own body and becomes more confident. He is proud of himself and starts showing his progress to others. Going to the gym also teaches him motivation, discipline, and patience. He learns from his mistakes and tries to become better every day.
For him, the gym becomes more than a place to exercise. It becomes a lifestyle and a place where he can relax and forget about his problems. Moreover, going to the gym with a friend can make the experience more enjoyable and give him a bigger boost of motivation.
In conclusion, we should never give up on our dreams. Success takes time, effort, and patience. If we work hard, we can become stronger, healthier, and better versions of ourselves.
2. Emma was a 15-year-old girl who dreamed of becoming a professional figure skater. Every day after school, she went to the ice rink to practise. She loved skating, but learning new moves was not easy.
At first, jumps seemed impossible. Emma often lost her balance and landed awkwardly, while the other girls performed with ease. Watching them made her doubt herself. Sometimes, frustration took over, and she wondered if she should give up.
One day, her coach encouraged her with a simple proverb: “No pain, no gain.” To succeed, Emma needed patience, determination, and hard work. Inspired by these words, Emma continued training despite her difficulties. She repeated each movement, listened to her coach's advice, and learned from every mistake. Gradually, her jumps improved, and confidence replaced her fear. A few months later, Emma entered her first skating competition. Nervous but determined, she stepped onto the ice as the music began. She glided gracefully across the rink and completed every jump she had practised so hard to master. When the results were announced, Emma won second place! Although she had not taken first prize, pride filled her heart. That day, Emma understood that success takes time, effort, and determination.
Moral: No pain, no gain. If you work hard and never give up, you can achieve your dreams.
3. Last year, I learned an important lesson at school. I had problems with mathematics, and I was afraid of an important test.
One day, I got a bad grade. I was sad and wanted to give up. My teacher saw that I was upset and told me, “No pain, no gain.” She explained that if I wanted good results, I had to work hard.
After that, I started studying every day. I did my homework and asked my teacher for help when I did not understand something. Sometimes, I felt tired, but I did not stop trying.
A few weeks later, I had another test. I was nervous, but I tried my best. When I got my result, I was very happy because I had a good grade.
This experience taught me an important lesson. School is not always easy, but we can learn from our mistakes. The proverb “No pain, no gain” means that we must work hard to achieve our goals. If we are patient and never give up, we can be successful.
4. Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Maria who loved painting. Her dream was to become a famous artist.
One day, her teacher announced an art competition at school. Maria was very excited and decided to take part. However, her first painting was not very good. The colours did not look right, and some of her classmates laughed at her. She felt sad and wanted to give up. Nevertheless, her mother encouraged her to keep trying. She told Maria that success takes time and hard work. From that day on, Maria practised every afternoon. She watched videos, learned new techniques, and tried to improve her paintings. Sometimes, she made mistakes, but she never stopped trying. After a few weeks, the day of the competition arrived. Maria was nervous, but she proudly showed everyone her painting. She did not win the first prize, but the judges liked her work and praised her progress. Maria was happy because she knew she had become a better artist. She understood that mistakes were part of learning and that patience was very important.
As you can imagine, Maria never stopped painting. She learned that if you want to achieve your dreams, you must work hard and never give up.
